“Uncovered sign” is a charming theme that photographers come across repeatedly as they explore the city – old hand-drawn signs exposed during demolition as part of the urban renewal process. Usually painted or carved directly onto the buildings decades or even a century ago, some signs survived till today because new owners only covered them with another layer of signage. When the city demolishes shabby shops and removes worn-out banners, these typography gems finally get to see the light again like archaeological mini-sites.

The book Uncovered Signs in Shanghai has collected over 170 signs spotted over seven years, most of them being recovered by new paint or completely dismantled with the building. Let’s follow these previous images and travel back in time.
