MondayOFF Issue#2 Talk: Medical Cosmetology & Snapchat Dysmorphia

LISHAN is an artist and photographer based in Shanghai. Her practice is concentrated on image/moving image strategies and production.

Funa YeBorn in Kunming, China. Now base in Beijing and London, Funa Ye`s practice is mainly concerned with the relationship between the realities of every day life, the perceived connection between authority and many areas of social life such as different power structure, ethnic groups, and the fictional space of propaganda for the concept of ‘perfection’ in an ideological system, and utopian landscape. Therefore, the work is politically charged, subtly engaged in pastiche as a satirizing style of propaganda. The work of Funa is rich in reference, parody and irony of the uniformity cultures.

BI Xin (Milia), writer and curator based in Shanghai. She is the Executive Director of Chronus Art Center, also leads the curatorial vision of public events at CAC. Her research and practices focus on the intersection of arts, internet aesthetics, decentralised technologies and contemporary social-culture/subculture. BI’s curatorial projects include Vapour Products℠, crypto_manifold, Superfetish S/S.

The new theme of MondayOFF Issue#2, “Medical Cosmetology”, impels us to confront some of the ultimate questions of art, such as “what is beauty?”. With all its paradoxes, the word “aesthetics” per se seems extended the modality and feature from that of the “medical treatment”. Today, however, when the term “aesthetic medicine” is mentioned, no longer does it merely refer to facial trauma reconstructions, but it also includes the concept of face and body transformation for the sake of one’s appearance with aesthetic quality. In most cases, aesthetic medicine is performed on a healthy individual to meet his/her certain psychological needs, but many “patients” are not necessarily “cured”. In fact, some of them may be the victims of cosmetic procedures that endanger their healthiness on both levels of physical appearances and psychology. Very few people found contentment within the first procedure, and being more “perfect” turns to be a myth. During the talk, the artist and photographer LISHAN and the co-founders of MondayOFF (Miia & Funa) will share their thoughts on the plastic surgery, filters and the digital bodies.
